Abe Ape - My Apology - Black and White (by imgIsNothing)

A spoken word artist and refugee apologizes for his invasion of indigenous land. This is what reconciliation is about: acknowledging the weight of the past, and not refusing the burden of bearing it.

Though I can’t speak for Australia, it’s something I’ve noticed in America a lot, especially among liberals and leftists, who talk a good game but don’t always understand their own culpability. In my family, as an example, it’s because we’re working-class Irish and Italian, ethnic groups that were shat on by WASP folks (and still are, to a certain extent (don’t fucking call me a guido, all right? I don’t care if Snooki says you can).

This doesn’t excuse us from the past, certainly not the recent past. Hello, race riots and inter-ethnic violence among the working class, Uncle Tony using plenty of racial epithets that don’t bear reprinting. It doesn’t excuse us from the more distant past either, even if it happened “before we got here”.

Abe Ape: thank you for my morning dose of discomfort, and for reminding me that I’ve got some work to do.

I keep saying it, why the fuck would you want to live in Australia?

Every time anyone tells me how great Australia is I just yell “TOILET SPIDERS” at them until they go away

This is actually how I think of the country.
